A Vietnamese delegation headed by Fisheries Deputy Minister Nguyen Viet Thang attended the 27th session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) held recently in Rome.

The biennial meeting drew 600 delegates from COFI-member countries, and scientists across the world.

The Vietnamese delegation called on the international community to help build a tsunami warning system and improve capacity for fisheries officials in developing countries located in the high-risk tsunami areas.

The Vietnamese delegation and other delegations from the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) put forward a proposal to establish a sub-committee on small-scale fisheries with the aim of attracting FAO and international assistance to small-scale fisheries and deprived fishermen's communities in developing countries.
