Ara Güler photo exhibition on Istanbul in Hanoi thru Aug. 21
A photo exhibition entitled “The Eye of Istanbul”, displaying the work of Turkish photographer Ara Güler, is being held at Leica Boutique in Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, through August 21, 2018.

Istanbul, located with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia, stands at the intersection of a multitude of cultures, religions and languages. At once modern and traditional, it is a city that has fascinated and intrigued visitors for centuries.
Güler, born in 1928 in Istanbul, is arguably Turkey’s most eminent photographer, having captured the everyday life of the city’s inhabitants for over 60 years. His images of Istanbul demonstrate his deep love of the city and its inhabitants.
His photos do not really document modernization, rather, they capture what is disappearing in the city and in Turkish society. In his images of the 1950s and 60s, viewers can feel the deep nostalgia Güler has for those times.
Güler’s work has been featured across international titles, including Time, Life, Stern and Paris Match. Despite years of being on the road and photographing famous luminaries, Güler’s heart remains rooted in Istanbul. He bears witness to its many changes, and continues to find inspiration photographing the city with his Leica camera.
Güler is the recipient of the Leica Hall of Fame Award 2016. A testament to the responsibility he carries as a photojournalist, he once said, “Photography is not an art. It is more important than art”.
