The Vietnamese Vovinam Federation was officially founded on October 19 in HCM City to promote the martial art domestically and also to pave the way for establishing an international vovinam federation.

The first-term executive committee of the federation will focus on building up its clubs at both provincial and district levels nationwide, making the sport part of school curriculum, and introducing it into the Asian Indoor Games 2009.

Vovinam, which was created by Nguyen Loc in Hanoi in 1938, is a combination of the country’s traditional wrestling and other martial arts. It has established official rules for competitions and is now practised by hundreds of thousands of people in about 35 nations and territories in the rest of the world.
