Female weightlifter to fill fourth Olympic slot

The weightlifting team will see their fourth athlete competing in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics this summer, setting a national record.

The fourth slot went to a female athlete, who will be decided later this month, after the women’s team success in the Asian championships, which closed in Uzbekistan in late April.

According to the regulation, the team which ranked in the top six would receive an automatic ticket and the Vietnamese squad did better than expected as the No 1 team with one gold, three silver and three bronze medals, grabbing 112 points.

World and Asian silver medallist Vuong Thi Huyen is the top candidate.

Earlier, the three slots for men went to Thach Kim Tuan, Tran Le Quoc Toan, and one athlete who has not been decided yet.

To date, Vietnam have scored 16 tickets to the Rio de Janeiro Games.
