Promoting bilateral defence cooperation between Vietnam and US

The second Vietnam-US defence policy dialogue concluded successfully in Washington DC on September 20.

The dialogue was co-chaired by the Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Lieutenant-General Nguyen Chi Vinh and Deputy-Assistant Secretary of Defence, Robert Scher.

The two sides expressed their delight at fine results of bilateral cooperation in defence in recent times and agreed to further boost cooperation for the benefit of each country, contributing to maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the world as a whole.

Lieutenant-General Vinh and Robert Scher signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on promoting bilateral defence cooperation with a focus on establishing mechanisms for regular dialogue at high-ranking level between the US Department of Defence and the Vietnamese Ministry of Defence, maritime security, search and rescue, research and experience sharing in the UN’s peace keeping, humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts.

The MoU outlined Vietnam’s independent and sovereign foreign and defence policies and steps to develop Vietnam-US defence cooperative relations.

During their stay in Washington DC, Lieutenant-General Vinh and his entourage met with some parliamentarians and leaders of the US Department of State and Department of Defence.
