Vietnamese have an aptitude for learning Russian and speaking with surprising fluency. According to a Russian diplomat, the reverse is also true – Russian make excellent Vietnamese speakers too.

A round-table conference entitled “Key projects in the Year of the Russian Language in Vietnam” has been held at the Russian Science and Culture Centre in Hanoi. Present at the conference were many Russian experts and linguists from Vietnamese big cities and many Vietnamese students who are studying Russian.

In addition to announcing key projects during the Year of the Russian Language in Vietnam, Russian linguists discussed issues related to learning and teaching Russian in Vietnam. During the conference, the organizing board also presented Russian teaching materials to Vietnamese universities, certificates of merit to Vietnamese students who won prizes at a recent Russian Language Olympics and scholarships for 10 outstanding Vietnamese students to study at Russian universities.

On the occasion, VOV reporter interviewed Russian vice-director A.S Sarumov from the Russian Centre for International Scientific and Cultural Cooperation under the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

VOV: The round-table conference is considered a starting point for the Year of the Russian Language in Vietnam. Can you tell us about the forthcoming events in the Year of the Russian Language in Vietnam?

Mr Sarumov: First is the Russian Language Olympics which will finish in June.

The most important part of the year will be Russian Week in early November. There will be all kinds of activities during the week, including an international conference on teaching Russian language as well as Russian literature, a seminar introducing Russian universities, and an exhibition on Russian books.

VOV: What do you think of developing Russian in Vietnam?

Mr Sarumov: I think that it is necessary to organize the Year of the Russian Language in Vietnam. This is not only important for the large number of Russian speakers but also the many Vietnamese people who love the Russian language and culture. Tens of thousands of Vietnamese people have graduated from Russian universities.

The Year of the Russian Language, which was launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin, is symbolic of the revival of the Russian language.

Russian is loved by Vietnamese people and Vietnamese is loved by Russian people. The two countries have a lot in common. Even when Vietnamese or Russian people speak their mother tongues people feel that they are speaking the same language.  Vietnamese have an aptitude for learning Russian and speaking with surprising fluency. The reverse is also true – Russian make excellent Vietnamese speakers too.

Relations between the two countries have fluctuated and today it is reviving and entering a new period of development. I believe that not only the Russian language but also cultural and human relations will further develop in the near future.

VOV: You have been in Vietnam for several times. What do you think of Vietnam?

Mr Sarumov: I have been in Vietnam three times, but, unfortunately all the visits were very short. However, the country has left a deep impression on me. I feel that every Vietnamese person is a friend. Whenever you speak to people you will see a friendly smile appear on their face as they find out you are from Russia. I believe that no one could forget the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Russia. I love Vietnamese people and Vietnamese people also said that they love Russia and Russian people. Vietnam did not turn its back on Russia when the country faced crisis during the 90s. We sincerely thank Vietnam for its sentiments. This is a firm foundation for the future relations between the two countries, ensuring the success of the Vietnamese language in Russia and the Russian language in Vietnam.

I was in Vietnam for the first time 6 years ago. During the past 6 years, Vietnam has made significant progress. I am very happy to see that Vietnam stands firmly on its feet and is successfully developing the country in peace and independence. I wish Vietnam further success in the future.

VOV: Thank you very much.
