VOVNews, in coordination with the Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA), held an online exchange about issues related to Agent Orange (AO) victims on August 7.

This was part of activities marking the 50th year after Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin began to be sprayed over areas of Vietnam. It aimed to joining hands to improve the health and living conditions of AO victims.

The event hopes to help people in Vietnam and around the world become aware of the lingering suffering of Vietnamese AO victims, as well as the efforts of the Party, State, VAVA, and other Vietnamese and international individuals and organizations in dealing with the negative consequences of the toxic chemicals.

The exchange was attended by Professor Dr. Tran Xuan Thu and VAVA Deputy Chairman and General Secretary, Dr. Le Hong Thom, Vice-Director of 10-80 Division from the Hanoi Medical University, as well as AO victim Nguyen Thi Huyen.

Prof. Thu talked about the residual destructiveness of AO/dioxin and called for more material and spiritual support from Vietnamese people and the international community.

He also pledged to help Vietnamese AO victims pursue justice and expressed his belief in their lawsuit against US chemical companies.

The VAVA Deputy Chairman also said that the Association will hold an international conference on AO victims on August 8-9, the second of its kind in Vietnam. The first conference took place in 2005.

Dr. Thom also emphasized the danger of AO/dioxin, saying the toxic chemical is one of the most harmful compounds to human health.

Generations of Vietnamese have suffered from the toxic chemicals sprayed by US troops in the past war. Fifty years have passed, but AO victims still have to face endless pain, she added.

AO victim Nguyen Thi Huyen shared her own sufferings and hardships, saying that all three of her parents' children are AO victims.

Huyen expressed her thanks for the special care from the Party and State, and hopes to receive further assistance from the community.
