Construction of a US$1-billion highway, connecting Hanoi to the northern border province of Lao Cai, is scheduled to start in June 2007, said the Ministry of Transport.

The 264-km long highway is part of an economic corridor linking the southern Chinese city of Kun Ming and the port city of Hai Phong in northern Vietnam.

The highway is designed to be a high-quality artery for vehicles to run at an average of 80-100 kilometres per hour. The first phase of the project, scheduled for completion in 2010, is estimated to cost nearly US$625 million. It will be funded by official development assistance (ODA) and the state budget.
