Massive landslides bury residents and houses in Lai Chau

VOV.VN - Three mountains have collapsed in the valley of Sin Ho district in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau, leaving residents and houses buried under vast mudslides as severe flooding continues to affect the area.

On June 27, residents in Nam Ha hamlet, Noong Heo commune, Sin Ho district joined the continued search efforts for victims of the flash floods and a serious mountain slide which occurred on June 24. A member of the rescue team says the mass of collapsed rock and soil is about 30 metres thick and they have worked tirelessly for three days in the search for the victims.
Nam Ha hamlet is located in the centre of the valley with four households and 10 inhabitants.
Hue Mong stream flows through Nam Ha hamlet, making it difficult for the rescue work.
A local resident says his wife and daughter are still missing while houses, rice fields and gardens have been buried under mudslides.
 
 
 
 
Relatives of the missing victims wait for information from rescue forces. On the morning of June 27, a rescue team found the body of one victim, Lo Van Kiem, buried under the mudslides and rocks.

Flash floods swept through residents’ gardens and paddy fields. According to the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, landslides, downpours and flooding in the northern mountainous region have killed 19 people, left 11 missing and injured 12. Severe flooding has also swept away many houses while rice and subsidiary crops were completely inundated and ruined. Total economic losses are estimated at VND440 billion.
