The first flights of Vietnam’s first private air Cargo carrier, Trai Thien Air Cargo Joint-Stock Company, is scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of next year.

Trai Thien AirCargo specialises in cargo transportation on domestic and international routes, with a focus on the Northeast Asian and Southeast Asian markets.

It has registered to operate with Boeing 737-300 freighters which were converted from passenger aircraft.

Trai Thien Corp was established from its subsidiaries Trai Thien Shipping Transport Investment and Development Joint-Stock Company, set up in June 2007, and Trai Thien Air Cargo Joint Stock Co, a year later.

Addressing the opening of the HCM City-based group on October 23, the president and CEO of Trai Thien Group, Nguyen Quoc Khanh, said with a charter capital of VND 500 billion (US$28 million), Trai Thien has four cargo ships with total capacity of 13,391 DWT.

By the end of this year, the groups’ fleet would incresed to eight with total capacity of more than 40,000 tonnes.

With a bigger fleet, the group will expand its services to Europe and North America, transporting cargo such as steel, machinery and equipment, timber, materials for agricultural production, rice, cement and clinker.

During the opening ceremony, the group also signed with the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corp (Vinashin) a contract to buy 16 vessels, each with a capacity ranging from 34,000 DWT to 56,000 DWT.

Trai Thien has proposed a US$300 million project to develop a deep-water seaport on Con Dao Island. The proposal has received the go-ahead from the southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial authority.

Trai Thien Shipping Transport Investment and Development Joint Stock Company has been listed on the US’s Over the Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB). The listing on the US securities market would help the group mobilise capital and build a strong brand around the world.
