Vietnam has been making great efforts to provide preferential treatment for children in keeping with the commitments it has made towards the international community.

The statement was made by National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An at the Asia-Pacific regional conference on increasing the role of parliaments in child protection, which was co-organised in Hanoi on February 15 by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Vietnam National Assembly and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Nearly 100 parliamentarians and experts from 18 Asian-Pacific countries and territories are taking part in the conference.

Addressing the event, Mr An said that the State’s legal system and policies, as well as the action plans for children by Government agencies and non-governmental organisations, have been increasingly improved to meet the humanitarian and practical goals in accordance with the country’s human development strategy.

During the conference, from February 15 to 17, participants will focus their discussions on ways to protect children and prevent child abuse and trafficking. They also shared experiences relating to legal regulations and mechanisms to ensure the implementation of children’s rights.
