The Vietnamese government will spend VND4.8 trillion to build housing for students in 2010, said Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Tran Nam.

A survey conducted by the Ministry of Construction showed that some provinces and cities hit snags in allocating accommodation for students as they have limited budgets.

In 2010, the Ministry will deliver the money to the provinces and cities unfinanced in 2009. It proposed that the housing be clustered around universities, especially where there already are a large number of students. Government bonds will be used to fund the already ratified projects.

The Ministry also asked provinces and cities to include housing target for students and low income workers in their annual socio-economic development plans.

It also urged them to allocate land for construction and mobilise capital from credit fund raisings to implement the projects as soon as possible.
