Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem on March 16 met with National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, Trade Representative Susan Schwab, Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierez, acting Secretary of Defence Gordon England and leaders of the US Export-Import Bank (Eximbank).

During a meeting with National Security Advisor Hadley, the two sides discussed preparations for the upcoming visit to the US by Vietnamese State President Nguyen Minh Triet, the possibility of cooperation in bilateral issues and regional and international issues of mutual concern.


Mr Khiem and leaders of economic organisations discussed measures to further boost investment and trade ties and upcoming negotiations of a trade and investment framework agreement (TIFA) between the two countries. 


Mr Khiem expressed his concern about the US proposal to supervise Vietnam’s garment exports to the US, saying it is an unfair treatment which goes against the principles of the World Trade Organisation and badly affects Vietnam’s garment exports. 


US economic officials said the US wants to boost economic and trade ties with Vietnam and that it will cooperate closely with Vietnam in tackling the issue.


Meanwhile, Mr Khiem stressed the importance of overcoming the consequences of war and building confidence during a meeting with acting Secretary of Defence England.


Vietnam will continue to help the US with the search for US personnel believed to be missing in action (MIA) during the war in Vietnam, said Mr Khiem, adding that the US should also provide more information about Vietnam’s MIA cases.  


Mr England thanked the Vietnamese Government for its effective cooperation in MIA issues and welcomed its desire to enhance visit exchanges, build confidence and speed u the implementation of current cooperation programmes such as those on International Military Education and Training (IMET) and landmine clearance.


Mr Khiem met with representatives of the US business circles, witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Vietnam’s Ministry of Post and Telematics and Microsoft Giant on Microsoft Office copyrights and visited The Washington Post headquarters.

He also met with representatives of Vietnamese nationals residing in Washington DC and nearby states. 


The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister made a week-long tour of US from March 11.
