State Vice President Truong My Hoa on January 1 visited northern Yen Bai province and presented gifts to 20 families of flash flood victims in 2005 in Cat Thinh commune, Van Chan District, on the occasion of the traditional Lunar New Year festival (Tet).

During her meeting with provincial leaders, Ms Hoa was briefed on the results and difficulties in carrying out provincial socio-economic development and poverty reduction tasks, especially in resolving the consequences of the flash flood in 2005. The Vice President highlighted the efforts of provincial leaders and local people and urged them to pay further attention to economic development and poverty reduction as well as devising assistance plans to families of flood victims.

 

Localities prepare for Tet holiday

*** To help poor people enjoy a happy Tet holiday, the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee has decided to provide more than VND3 billion in allowance to 30,726 poor families, Agent Orange victims, social policy beneficiaries, and those in charitable houses. The City Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs also provided allowance worth VND2.6 billion to families of war martyrs and invalids. Districts and benefactors raised VND1.2 billion in cash and food to help families in difficulties to enjoy Tet holiday.

 

*** Northen mountainous Cao Bang province has prepared 800 gifts worth VND100,000 each for families of policy beneficiaries, families of war martyrs and invalids, poor families and heroic Vietnamese mothers. Currently, 4,500 families, who live mainly in remote and mountainous areas, are experiencing a shortage of food and the province has planned to support each family with 10 kilograms of rice. In addition to the provincial budget, departments, enterprises and social charitable organizations raised funds to help the poor, especially ethnic minority people.

 

*** Northwestern Quang Ninh province will let off mid-range fireworks at Bai Chay Bridge, Ha Long City on New Year’s Eve.

 

*** The Culture and Information Centre in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu will organize diverse cultural activities during Tet holiday such as art performances, an ornamental plants exhibition, Spring press, as well as flower and trade fairs.

 

*** To mark the 77th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (February 3) and traditional Lunar New Year festival, central Quang Ngai province is organizing a number of cultural and sport events such as spring fair, sculpture, painting and art photo exhibitions, Spring press fair, cultural exchanges, a boat race, a lantern release on the river and art performances.

 

*** On January 1, 100 poor families in Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City, received gifts worth VND200,000 each from non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Taiwan-China, Singapore and France. On the occasion, the city’s union of friendship organizations in coordination with NGOs raised funds and presented 550 gifts totaling VND140 million to the poor.
