A Vietnamese representative on the UN Security Council has applauded Liberia’s significant progress in stabilising the political situation and promoting the process of national reconciliation and reconstruction.

Speaking at the council’s debate on the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) in New York on September 9, Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung highlighted the Liberian Government’s efforts in political reform, economic development and poverty reduction.

The diplomat spoke highly of UNMIL’s assistance to Liberia in terms of security consolidation, training and capacity-building, and HIV/AIDS prevention.
“The active role played by UNMIL has greatly facilitated the overall stabilisation, post-conflict reconstruction and peace-building as well as sustainable socio-economic development both in Liberia and the sub-region of West Africa,” Mr Trung said.

The ambassador agreed with the UN Secretary General’s recommendations regarding a drawdown plan for UNMIL, noting that this plan should be conducted step by step with a clear timetable depending on the Liberian Government’s ability to ensure security and stability.
