Cambodia, Vietnam hold first defence dialogue

(VOV) - On October 19, the Vietnam Ministry of National Defence convened their first strategic defence dialogue with their Cambodian counterparts and discussed measures to develop all around pragmatic military to military relations.

After the meeting in Phnom Penh, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh said both sides pledged to boost their defence relationship based on mutual respect and accommodating each other's security concerns for mutual trust.

Vinh said during the talks, the two sides compared notes on significant defence issues affecting the region and each side pointed out steps they believed would enhance defence cooperation.

Both sides agreed that the formation of the ASEAN Community later this year is a positive development, giving them fresh impetus  for stronger cooperation in a vast array of areas including defence.

Cambodia’s Secretary of State General Neang Phat in turn said relations between the parties have flourished over recent years, noting that Cambodians would forever be thankful for Vietnam’s past support during the brutal regime of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.
