Construction begins on Vietnam-Cambodia bridge

(VOV) - PM Nguyen Tan Dung and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen attended the January 14 ground-breaking ceremony for a bridge linking the two countries’ localities.

Long Binh-Chrey Thom bridge, linking An Giang province of Vietnam and Kandal province of Cambodia, is the second biggest transport project funded by preferential Vietnamese Government loans.

The project’s feasibility study began in 2003, and officials, engineers, and workers from both countries have closely coordinated in surveying and designing the bridge.

The bridge’s 20-month construction will cost US$38 million—US$17.8 million of which is sourced from Vietnam.

The completed bridge will dramatically shorten travel time between the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh and the Vietnamese border, facilitating economic and trade development and poverty reduction campaigns in border areas.

PM Dung commended the close coordination between relevant ministries and agencies of Vietnam and Cambodia to ensure the project gets off the ground on time.

Describing the bridge as a symbol for comprehensive cooperation relationship between the two countries, PMs Dung and Hun Sen asked the designated agencies to monitor and support contractors and investors in completing the project as schedule.
