Vietnam is Chile’s most important export market in Southeast Asia.

In the first half of this year, Chile exported more than US$4.2 million worth of grapes to Vietnam, up 24 percent against the same period last year and higher than the country’s total fruit exports to Vietnam in 2011.

According to the Trade Promotion Bureau (ProChile), last year, Chile ranked fourth among exporters of fruit to Vietnam, after China, the US and Australia.

The South American country also exported almond, apples, cherries and kiwi to Vietnam, earning US$4.16 million in 2011, a year-on-year increase of 26 percent.

ProChile said with annual consumption of 62kg of fruit per person – a rather high level in the world - Vietnam is a potential market for Chile, especially when Vietnamese consumers tend to boycott Chinese fruit due to using forbidden preservative substances. Meanwhile Chilean fruit meet strict quality and safety requirements.
