The Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, effectively applying nuclear technology to serve national socio-economic development.

Speaking at a meeting to mark the institute’s 30th founding anniversary in Hanoi on April 29, director Vuong Huu Tan highlighted the institute's achievements in scientific research and nuclear technology application, such as using radioactive elements in healthcare, construction, transport, industry, environmental protection, agriculture and energy.

In the 2001-2005 period, the institute had 527 scientific projects published, including 240 projects announced on local and foreign magazines, in publications or at international conferences.

Mr Tan said his institute plans to put more emphasis on developing nuclear power, application of radiation and radioactive isotopes, support of technical service and personnel training, with the aim of effectively implementing the strategy on application of atomic energy for peaceful purposes in Vietnam.

It is scheduled that the first nuclear power plant will be built and safely run to gradually increase the rate of nuclear electricity in the total electricity production, from 11 percent in 2025 to 25-30 percent in 2040-2050.
