Vietnam pledges to promote rule of law at national and international level

VOV.VN - The nation will press ahead with proactive and responsible co-operation with the UN and other countries as it promotes the rule of law at both national and international levels, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnam mission to the UN, affirmed.

Upon addressing a meeting of the Legal Committee (Sixth Committee) of the UN General Assembly’s 75th session held on October 20 in New York, the Vietnamese diplomat underlined the vital role of the rule of law at both national and international levels. Indeed, it is a key factor in preserving socio-economic development, assurances over human rights, and maintaining global peace and security.

Activities aimed at promoting the rule of law at a national level should focus on protecting vulnerable groups whilst ensuring fairness and equality, especially in relation to ongoing complicated developments caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, he said.
Quy emphasised that international law and principles of the UN Charter serve as the basic foundation of the international system, therefore calling on all countries to respect the principles of a peaceful settlement for international disputes. This should be done whilst upholding the role of international courts to peacefully settle international disputes and encourage adherence to the rule of law at an international level.

With regard to issues in the East Sea, Ambassador Quy said the country is working alongside with other ASEAN members to build a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Southeast Asia.

The local diplomat also expressed deep concerns over the recent complicated developments which have taken place in the East Sea, adding that these actions serve to undermine trust among various nations, whilst also increasing tensions and affecting peace, security, and stability throughout the region.

Furthermore, the Ambassador urged all concerned parties to comply with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), promote confidence building, and refrain from unilateral actions that could potentially complicate the situation and increase tensions. This should be done whilst peacefully settling disputes in accordance with the UN Charter, international law, including UNCLOS, and fully respecting the legal, political, and regulatory processes of UNCLOS in terms of defining maritime claims.

Most notably, the Legal Committee is one of the six main committees of the UN General Assembly, that groups representatives from all 193 UN member states in order to review legal issues. Topics currently under discussion at the Committee include the rule of law at national and international levels, reports of the UN Commissions on International Law and International Trade Law, and measures to eliminate international terrorism.
