Vietnamese players defeated their Thai arch-rivals 3-0 after penalty shootouts in a long-awaited match in Laos on December 16, winning a gold medal.

In the first half, Vietnam produced more attacks and scoring chances than Thai, but they failed to break through the Thai defence.

They wasted a good chance in the 46th minute when Kim Hong passed the ball to veteran Kim Chi who rushed into the box and faced the Thai goalie. However, she was denied.

After the interval, Thai players were straight back on the attack and their high tempo start showed that they would dominate the game. They many times tested Vietnamese goalkeeper Kieu Trinh who worked hard to keep her goal clean.

In the 49th minute, a Thai player broke through the Vietnamese defence and fired in a fierce drive that was well palmed away by Kieu Trinh.

Seven minutes later, the Thai did not make full use of a free kick near the box when one of their players was fouled by Dao Thi Mien.

On 67 minutes, veteran Kim Chi received a pass from Van Thi Thanh inside the box, jumping high with a header, but the Thai goalie produced a brilliant save.

Five minutes later, Vietnamese defenders lost control, offering a chance for Thai players to face goalkeeper Kieu Trinh. However, a Thai player drove the ball over the post.

When the game had eight minutes to go, Kim Hong had a scoring chance, but she was denied by the Thai goalie.

After 120 minutes, both teams did not score a goal and entered into the penalty shootout. Three Vietnamese women Kim Hong, Van Thi Thanh and Kim Tien fulfilled their duties while their Thai players failed.

Vietnamese women lost to their Thai rivals in the final match at the 24th SEA Games held in Thailand two years ago.

On December 17, Vietnam will take on Malaysia in men’s final game.

On December 16, Vietnam scooped 16 more gold medals equal to Thailand , but ranked second due to the number of silver and bronze medals.

Three gold medals were bagged in fin-swimming and two in shuttle cock.

Judo also brought three gold medals for Vietnam.
