The Vietnam National Assembly has opened a seminar on experience and skills for organizing activities of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) with the aim of preparing Vietnam for assuming the AIPA presidency in the 2009-2010 term and hosting the 31st AIPA General Assembly in Hanoi.

The two-day seminar, which began on October 31, provides participants with general knowledge about the history, development, structure and activities of the AIPA as well as the Vietnam National Assembly’s process of joining and contributing to the regional organization.

Participants will also be trained in the skills of chairing and participating in multilateral parliamentary forums and will study issues related to communication and protocol etiquette.

Addressing the seminar, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong highlighted the significance of the 31st AIPA General Assembly and urged greater efforts to be made so that Vietnam could help improve the efficiency of ASEAN and the AIPA.

Vietnam became an official member of the AIPA (formerly AIPO) in 1995 and successfully hosted the 23rd AIPO General Assembly in 2002.
