Khmer ethnic minority people in the southern provinces of An Giang, Bac Lieu and Tra Vinh are gearing up for their Chol Chnam Thmay New Year festival, which traditionally falls in mid April.

Provincial authorities have exerted greater efforts to improve the living conditions of the Khmer community. A series of programmes and projects financed by the State, localities and international organisations have focused on developing roads, markets, power grid and water supply networks and granting loans to the Khmer to do business.

To mark the occasion of the festival, An Giang province has allocated over 2,470 ha of cultivated land to 4,580 Khmer households in Tri Ton and Tinh Bien districts.

Since 2006 to the first quarter of 2007, the province presented 1,800 houses to disadvantaged people and helped 4,300 families settle in new residential areas.

Tra Vinh and Bac Lieu authorities have presented gifts to Khmer families as well as pagodas making significant contributions to the local development.
