The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) has submitted to the government a project to build and run a marine express North-South transport route with a total investment of nearly US$1.2 billion sourced from state bonds, loans and the company’s own capital.

The fleet operating the route will include two large vessels that can accommodate 2,700 passengers and 900 vehicles, will travel between Hon Gai and HCM City, and four smaller vessels that can carry 1,000 passengers and 600 vehicles, will run from Hon Gai to Chan May, and from Chan May to HCM City.

During the first phase, Vinashin will buy ships built in Italy to save costs and learn managerial skills. In the next phase, it will build its own vessels with investment in the fleet due to be complete by 2011.

At the end of 2007, Vinashin bought a 60-million-euro ship from Italy, which is currently running on a trial basis. The ship, called Hoa Sen (Lotus), can carry 630 passengers, 100 cars and 153 containers.
