The eight Vietnam banking exhibition and conference (Banking Vietnam 2008) officially took place in Hanoi on May 22 under the theme “Enhancing Competitive Advantage for Banks”.

The two-day event was co-organized by the Informatics Technology Department of Banking (ITDB) under the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) and the International Data Group (IDG).

As the banking sector faces a time of strong growth and fierce competition, Banking Vietnam 2008 focused on improving the competitive capacity of banks through application of the latest information and communication technologies (ICT) in banking management and customer services.

With its four main sessions, the international event covered almost every banking issue from macro to micro matters and from policies to management strategies, including banking security, core banking and banking business administration, risk management and ICT application in payment activities. According to ITDB Director Dr. Ta Quang Tien, these are pressing matters for Vietnamese banks to increase their competitive advantages to run their businesses profitably.

Meanwhile, a discussion was held on the topic “Modern banking technology and the competitive ability of Vietnamese banking systems”. Participants discussed measures to effectively manage and implement payment systems and efficiently centralize the management of banking operations.

In addition to the seminar, an exhibition also took place to introduce latest technologies, solutions, devices and services for modernizing banking systems during the renovation and integration process.

There was a wide range of products and technologies exhibited from both ICT businesses and comercial banks.

Banking Vietnam 2008 not only served as a major forum for technology but also for other areas such as securities and education. This was an important event drawing the participation of a large number of commercial banks and top Vietnamese and foreign services suppliers.
