Mexican academics admire Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements

Researchers and students from the University of National Autonomy of Mexico said they have admired Vietnam’s renovation achievements and its growing role in the region and the world.

They joined in a recent talk on Vietnam-Mexico relations held in anticipation of the upcoming 42nd anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties on May 19.

They showed their eagerness to learn more about heroic Vietnam in the fight to gain independence in the past and an example in the nation-building today.

They expressed wishes to join hands in stepping up the cooperation and exchanges between people and youngsters of the two countries.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Mexico Le Linh Lan told them that friendship and cooperation between the two countries are growing across the board, especially in trade, with growth averaging 20% a year.

The two countries boast potential for partnership in the manufacturing industry, agriculture, aquaculture, education and tourism, she said.

Mexico is currently Vietnam’s third largest trader in Latin America after Brazil and Argentina, while Vietnam is Mexico’s eighth biggest trade partner in Asia-Pacific.

The countries made a trade value of US$2.369 billion in 2016, rising 17.12 percent from 2015. The figure included Vietnam’s export of US$1.8 billion to Mexico, mainly telephones and spare parts, footwear, computer and components, and apparels.

Political and diplomatic ties have been reinforced, evidenced by political consultations, visit exchange, and support at international forums, such as APEC.

Ambassador Le Linh Lan expressed her hope that Vietnam-hosted APEC 2017 meeting will increase cooperation among Asian-Pacific member economies, including Mexico and Vietnam.
