NA Chairwoman appreciates WB-funded programs, projects

VOV.VN -The programs and projects funded by the World Bank (WB) are in accordance with the Vietnamese Party and State’s orientations in the new period, which has helped Vietnam to implement its socio-economic development plans towards deeper integration into the world economy.

National Assembly (NA) Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan made the remarks at a June 26 reception in Hanoi for World Bank (WB) Vice President for East Asia and the Pacific Victoria Kwakwa.

At the meeting, the WB official touched upon the two major issues facing Vietnam- environmental impacts and public debt. Environmental issue is becoming increasingly important for countries around the globe as well as for Vietnam as it affects the development of each country, Victoria Kwakwa emphasized, Vietnam is encountering numerous environmental challenges in terms of water, land and air.

Congratulating the National Assembly and the Government of Vietnam on the economic achievements recorded in the first half of the year and GDP in 2018 forecast to reach 6.8%, Victoria Kwakwa said the balance of the Vietnamese economy is quite stable when debt-to-GDP ratio is at the permissible level. These impressive results have been partly attributed to the NA’s legislative work, which has built and enacted many important laws, she noted.

Vitoria KwaKwa said she hopes Vietnam’s legislative body would closely supervise the debt ceiling.

The top Vietnamese legislator asked the WB to continue supporting Vietnam in improving its policies and legal framework so as to ensure macroeconomic stability and promote growth, especially in the private sector, human resource development, social harmony and sustainability of natural resources and the environment.

In addition to supporting programs and projects, Vietnam expects the WB to increase support for Vietnam’s policy advice to help the country maintain its macro-economic stability and boost socio-economic development, the NA leader told her guest.
