State leader calls for greater national unity

(VOV) - State President Truong Tan Sang has called on the Vietnamese people inside and outside the country to strengthen the national unity bloc and contribute to the national development process.

President Sang made the request in the “Xuan Que Huong” (Homeland Spring) programme - an annual event held by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA) – in Hanoi on February 3 to welcome Vietnamese expatriates back home for traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) Festival celebrations.

The event was attended by high-ranking Party and State leaders, ambassadors and heads of foreign diplomatic missions in Vietnam.

President Sang informed the participants about Vietnam’s significant socio-economic achievements over the past year in the context of regional and global economic downturn.

He affirmed that these achievements were attributed to constant efforts by the entire Vietnamese people, including those living abroad.

He highlighted the traditional worship of Hung Kings in northern Phu Tho , which has been recognised by UNESCO as the world’s intangible cultural heritage, saying this is the symbol of national great unity that has helped Vietnam overcome difficulties in its national construction and development.

The State leader praised the practical contributions of overseas Vietnamese, such as charitable work for social policy beneficiaries and soldiers garrisoned in islands and border areas.

He stressed that the Vietnamese Party and State always create favourable conditions for Vietnamese expatriates to visit and contribute to the homeland.

On this occasion, a special music and dance performance was given by artists from Vietnam and abroad in praise of the homeland.
