Vietnam hosts int’l seminar on oceanography

(VOV) - Hundreds of scientists from around the world attended the ninth international scientific seminar of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission/Western Pacific (IOC/WESTPAC) in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa central province on April 22.

The event serves as a bridge for scientists, especially young scientists to conduct research activities and assess achievements in maritime science over the last 25 years.

It also provided an opportunity for scientists to exchange knowledge on maritime science, share the wealth of the ocean and promote comprehensive cooperation to bring benefits to the public.

The seminar focused on themes such as biodiversity, food security and safety, and newly emerging issues, with the delivery of more than 500 scientific reports. In addition, a forum was also held to create a framework for leaders of institutes, universities and executive agencies to improve networks, exchange development orientations and challenges in science and technology, as well as devising action plans towards common goals of the IOC.

Director of the Institute of Oceanography, Vo Si Tuan said that this is the first time Vietnam has hosted such an event in the history of IOC/WESTPAC which has made an important contribution to marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the IOC as well as highlighting the role and responsibility of Vietnam for  the world’s oceanography.
