A delegation led by Fisheries Minister Ta Quang Ngoc on January 7 paid a visit to the central province of Phu Yen to inspect prevention and containment strategies against possible bird flu outbreaks in humans.

Bird flu has not occurred in Phu Yen over the past four years. However, the province should focus on the prevention of the epidemic and set up two quarantine checkpoints at Binh Phu bridge crossing the Cau river and Ca pass to prevent the spread of the disease from other areas into Phu Yen through national highway 1A, Minister Ngoc said.

The same day, another delegation led by Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Quoc Thang visited the central province of Quang Ngai to examine the implementation of measures to prevent and combat bird flu outbreaks.

Also on January 7, the northern province of Quang Ninh practised necessary measures which will be taken in the event of an H5N1 case in humans. About 700 people from 185 wards, communes, towns and sectors in the province participated in the exercise.

So far, Quang Ninh has nearly completed the immunisation of its poultry. In January, the provincial veterinary sub-department administered the second dose of vaccine for duck flocks and newly-hatched poultry and provided 1.3 tonnes of chemicals and facilities to localities.
