The Gemalink Joint Stock Company, on June 28 signed a contract with Korean Dealim – SAMWHA to build the Gemalink –Cai Mep Deep Water Port in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau.

Gemalink will be the biggest port in the Cai Mep port complex, with a total investment capital of US$330 million for the first phase of construction, which will begin in August, 2010 and be put into operation in 2013.

After completing phase 1, it will have a 800-metre-long wharf for mother vessels and a 260-metre-long wharf for barges. The container depot will cover an area of 33 ha and have a design capacity to load 1.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year.

When the construction of the second phase is completed in 2014, the total area of the depot will be increased to 72 ha and its loading capacity will double.

The Cai Mep port Complex in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province belongs to port complex No. 5 in the government’s overall project to develop a system of sea ports for 100,000 DWT ships.

The signing of the contract is a milestone in the Gemadept ‘s development strategy to develop a system of sea ports and marine services at key economic regions along Vietnam’s coast.
