First successful kidney-pancreas transplant in Vietnam

(VOV) - March 3 witnessed a monumental breakthrough for the Vietnamese medical profession when doctors at 103 Hospital successfully carried out the first kidney-pancreas transplant operation.

This was stated by Lieutenant-General Nguyen Tien Binh, Prof, Director of the Military Medical Academy.

Associate Professor Hoang Manh An, Director of Hospital 103 described how the 43 year-old patient had been transplanted with a kidney and pancreas donated by a person left brain-dead in a fatal traffic accident.

More than 150 medical workers from the Military Medial Academy and Hospital 103 engaged in the 13-hour surgery.

Associate Professor Hoang Manh An said that the initial success of the first human kidney-pancreas transplant has opened up prospects for Vietnamese doctors to affirm their qualifications on a par with international standards.
