Weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan won a silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games on August 10, bringing Vietnam the first medal at the world’s biggest sporting event.

Tuan took the silver lifting 290 kg in both the snatch and the clean and jerk, only 2kg less than the host player Long Quingquan who lifted 292 kg to win the men’s 56kg division weightlifting gold medal.

Indonesia’s Eko Yuli Irawan bagged the bronze with 288 kg.

Tuan is the second athlete to bring home a silver medal from the Olympic Games. The first was won by women’s taekwondo athlete Tran Hieu Ngan at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
