An organic fish farming model that meets international standards, certified by Naturland of Germany and the Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO), is expanding throughout the Mekong Delta province of An Giang for growing demand.

The An Giang Fisheries Association (AFA) coordinated with the Binca Seafood Company (BSC) of Germany to carry out a pilot project in 2004 to raise organic tra catfish in net enclosures and floating rafts in Long Xuyen town. Thanks to the project, organic tra catfish production increased to 700 tonnes in 2005, up from just 100 tonnes in 2004.
According to AFA, customers' demand for organic tra catfish is estimated to be 1,200 tonnes in 2006.

To meet the demand for organic tra catfish in the European Union, AFA will continue its cooperation with the BSC to expand the model to households throughout the province.
