Hanoi welcomed around 5.9 million tourists, including 1.1 million foreigners in 2006, a year-on-year increase of 11 percent, according to the municipal Department of Tourism.

The city’s turnover from tourism is expected to reach nearly US$875 million in 2006, up 26.8 percent compared to last year.

The number of foreign visitors coming from north-eastern Asia, Europe and northern America increased sharply, by 10.7 percent from the US, 13.4 percent from the Germany and 128.4 percent from Thailand. The Municipal Department of Tourism has estimated that the number of tourists from China will rise again soon as a large number of tourists like to come to Vietnam by sea.

By 2010, the city is expected to welcome around 2 million foreign visitors and 7 million domestic tourists.
