Vietnam, Ukraine boost trade ties

Vietnam and the Ukraine have agreed to increase bilateral cooperation in various areas, especially in economics, trade and investment.

The agreement was reached during talks in Kiev on October 5 between PM Mykola Azarov and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung, who is on a current visit to the Ukraine.

PM Azarov affirmed that developing the friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation with Vietnam is one of the priority areas in the Ukraine’s foreign policy.

PM Dung stressed that in its foreign affairs, Vietnam always attaches great importance to developing relations with traditional friends, including the Ukraine.

The two Government leaders agreed on the great prospects for the Vietnam-Ukraine cooperation and comprehensive partnership, which was established during the Ukrainian President’s visit to Vietnam in March 2011.

They noted that the two countries should continue to finalise a legal framework for bilateral cooperation and increase operational efficiency of the Vietnam-Ukraine Intergovernmental Committee for Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.

They agreed on measures to support import-export activities and remove bilateral trade barriers in an effort to double two-way trade in 2012 from US$260 million in 2010.

Both host and guest affirmed that they will try their best to make the most of the two countries’ great potential for investment cooperation, especially in energy, mechanical engineering, machinery manufacturing, chemicals and shipbuilding.

At the same time, they will endeavour to implement signed agreements in banking, agriculture and telecommunications in order to expand cooperation in these areas, while studying the possibility for cooperation in other areas, including high technology, aviation and space science.

PM Azarov and PM Dung vowed to create favourable conditions for the two countries’ businesses to increase cooperation in their potential areas, encourage the exchange of information, and seek modes of effective cooperation, including opening joint venture companies in each other’s territories.

Mr Dung expressed hope that the Ukraine government will support the implementation of the Vietnam Army Telecom Corporation-funded Internet bandwidth project in the country.

PM Azarov agreed with PM Dung’s proposal to increase the number of scholarships for Vietnamese students to study at Ukrainian universities.

PM Dung hailed the Aerosvit airlines for its plan to open a direct route between Kiev and Ho Chi Minh City this December, which will help boost people-to-people exchanges and tourism development.
The two leaders stressed the importance of continuing cooperation in military techniques, education and training, science and technology and culture.

They expressed satisfaction at the close coordination between the two countries in international forums.
PM Azarov said the Ukraine will provide continued support for the Vietnamese community living and working in the country.

PM Dung invited PM Azarov to visit Vietnam at an appropriate time, and the invitation was accepted with pleasure.

After the talks, the two PMs witnessed the signing of the minutes of the 12th meeting of the Ukraine-Vietnam Intergovernmental Committee for Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, and a memorandum of understanding between Hanoi National University and Kiev National University.

PM Nguyen Tan Dung began an official visit to the Ukraine at the invitation of PM Mykola Azarov on October 4.
