Vietnam's health care service expenditure for HIV/AIDS patients is still modest, meeting only 35 percent of the need, said a national conference on the disease in Hanoi on May 18.

The conference said the country has detected about 105,000 HIV/AIDS patients, and every year discovers about 10,000 more patients.

The reality poses a big challenge to the health care service, which still shows weakness and ineffectiveness particularly at the district level, thus diminishing patients' access the treatment service.

To provide medical treatment for 90 percent of HIV/AIDS carriers, the health care service must reinforce its network, improve skills for medical workers, build a standard process for HIV/AIDS treatment, and provide outpatient treatment at the grassroots levels, said the conference.
