Indian Odissi dancers impresss in Vietnam
(VOV) - Vietnamese audiences have enjoyed the famous Indian dance troupe Odissi’s outstanding performances at the opening ceremony of a three-day event in Hanoi on December 7.
The event, co-organised by the Embassy of India in Vietnam and universities in Hanoi, marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 5th anniversary of the strategic partnership between Vietnam and India.
The Odissi dance originated in east India’s Orissa State is one of the country’s eight classical dance forms. It is easily distinguished from other dances by the importance it places upon the independent movement of the head, chest, and pelvis, and through its basic square stance.

The dance is considered a styled pantomime that uses body movements and facial expressions to communicate a theme or story.
Odissi dance was originally dedicated to the God but has now becomes a popular performance style for both male and female dancers free from any religious associations.
The Odissi troupe is currently led by Aruna Mohanty, one of the best Odissi dancers, from the Odissi Dance Academy.
A series of cultural activities will also be held within the framework of the anniversary celebrations.
