State President Nguyen Minh Triet arrived in Vienna on June 2, beginning an official visit to Austria at the invitation of President Heinz Fischer.

This was the first visit to Austria by a Vietnamese president since the two countries established diplomatic ties 36 years ago.

The president was welcomed at the airport by Minister of Economics and Labour Martin Bartenstein, the Austria Ambassador to Vietnam and the Vietnamese Ambassador to Austria.

Shortly after the official welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace in the evening, President Triet held talks with President Fischer on measures to promote the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Austria, especially in economics, trade and investment.

Last year, two-way trade between the two countries reached more than US$175 million. By March 2008, Austria had invested US$12.4 million in 10 projects in Vietnam, ranking 54th among 84 foreign investors in the country.
