President Triet asks students to follow Prof. Ngo Bao Chau’s example

Vietnamese students should follow Professor Ngo Bao Chau’s example, said State President Nguyen Minh Triet while attending the ceremony to mark the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year at Thang Long high school in Hanoi on September 4.

Speaking to teachers and students at the school, President Triet highlighted the school’s achievements in the past year. For the past ten years, Thang Long high school has been recognised as one of the best schools in Hanoi, with the number of top students reaching nearly 85 percent. In the 2009-2010 academic year, the school had 30 excellent students and eight excellent teachers at the district and municipal levels.

The State leader asked every teacher and officer of Thang Long school to uphold tradition and chalk up even greater achievements in the future, so they school will deserve to bear the name of the capital city and its glorious thousand-year history.

Mr Triet said he is very proud of Professor Ngo Bao Chau who has just won the Fields Medal – the world’s most prestigious award given to mathematics under the age of 40. He expressed his hope that Vietnamese students and pupils will follow Professor Chau’s example to develop Vietnam into a powerful nation on par with other countries as Uncle Ho anticipated.

He told the students at Thang Long school to help each other in their studies, nurture good morals and actively take part in social activities.

At the ceremony, President Triet beat the drum to open the new school year to the delight of the school’s students and teachers.

*** Also on September 4, Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh attended the opening of the new school year at Chu Van An high school in Hanoi. Minister of Education and Training, Pham Vu Luan, was also present at the event.

Mr Manh congratulated Chu Van An school’s teachers and students on their new academic year, saying they should set bright examples in their teaching and studying for good morality and a civilised lifestyle.

Chu Van An is considered a cradle for outstanding students. Uncle Ho visited the school three times and the hundred-year old school has been recognised as a national cultural and historical relic site. It will be awarded the honourable title of “Labour Hero in the Renewal Period”.

The Party leader expressed his wish that teachers and students of the school would fulfil their goals and join hands with the whole nation to build a prosperous Vietnam.

*** The same day, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan attended the beginning of the new academic year in Phan Chu Trinh senior secondary school in Da Lat city in the Central Highland province of Lam Dong.

Mr Nhan praised the remarkable achievements recorded by the school over the past decades which have greatly contributed to the strong development of the local education sector.

On the occasion, Deputy PM Nhan presented 25 bicycles, 10,000 notebooks and one computer to outstanding poor students of Phan Chu Trinh school.

*** In the morning of September 4, new school year ceremonies were also held at many schools in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces and cities across the country.
