Ethnic affairs and policies under review

VOV.VN - A conference to review ethnic affairs and policies over the last 5 years and discuss plans for 2016 was held in Lao Cai province on February 27.

Head of the Steering Committee for the Northwestern Region, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said national unity is of strategic importance in Vietnam’s revolution.

He underscored the need to fine-tune policies and mechanisms to ensure equality and socio-economic development in ethnic areas.

While echoing the Deputy PM’s views, the Committee’s Minister-Chairman Giang Seo Phu also blamed resource shortage for pending policies, programmes and projects.

He said ethnic minority-inhabited and mountainous regions still met a lot of economic difficulties, poor socio-economic infrastructure, especially in transport, electricity, irrigation, and medical and educational facilities.

Vietnam spent US$6.8 billion carrying out policies on mountain and ethnic areas from 2011 to 2015.

Participants at the conference agreed upon key tasks in 2016 with a focus on effectively carrying out ethnic-related programmes, policies and projects.
