HCM City's Department of Transporation has drawn up a list of priority infrastructure projects which will be discussed at a conference on June 24.

To make a breakthrough in the public transport network and limit the number of private cars to prevent traffic jams, the department has given top priority to building trams and underground rail system or metro.

The city is calling for immediate investment to build two tram routes, one linking Nguyen Van Linh road to Tan Thuan Bridge in district 2 and another linking Quang Trung Software Park in Quang Trung street to Go Vap. There are huge traffic jams on these routes due to huge volume of vehicles and small roads. The total investment capital needed for the two tram routes is around VND9 billion.

Under the plan for urban development till 2025, HCM City will build six metro routes. The total invesment for each project amounts to VND20,000-30,000 billion. Most of the projects will be carried out under the investment-business-transfer model and use ODA capital sources.

The department said that the city is also calling for invesment in key projects to upgrade major sections of the highway network in the future.
