By May 22, as many as 200 people were reported dead and missing and the National Committee for Search and Rescue continued co-operating with local authorities in their relief efforts. The Committee has also dispatched navy ships and rescue ships to join in the search for fishermen in distress.

National Assembly (NA) deputies on May 23 began their working day by offering a silent tribute of condolence to the victims of Typhoon Chanchu.

Local authorities in central Da Nang city were in readiness to welcome the first ships carrying the surviving fishermen and the bodies of victims, which were due to dock at Han River port around noon.

Earlier on May 22, a Government working delegation led by head of the Central Committee for Storm and Flood Prevention and Control Le Huy Ngo and Deputy Chairman of the National Committee for Search and Rescue Nguyen Duc Soat had working sessions with local leaders of the central provinces of Quang Nam and Quang Ngai to direct joint action for victim rescue and reception.

The same day, VOV interviewed Mr Soat about search and rescue efforts at sea.
Mr Soat said his committee is currently co-ordinating with localities to identify the number of sinking or surviving fishing boats and the number of rescued victims from the fishing boats that were still missing. In addition, the committee has dispatched navy ships and rescue ships to join in the search for fishermen in distress. So far, the survivors and dead victims are being transported by the navy ships to the mainland.

He said 15 ships from Da Nang and six ships from Quang Ngai are getting fuel supplies from the navy ships.
The committee is sending three more navy ships and two others from the Central Rescue Centre to help bring the surviving fishermen ashore.

At Da Nang hospital, physicians are prepared to provide immediate treatment to the wounded as soon as they return. Meanwhile, the Forensic Examination Centre in Da Nang is conducting autopsy to help families identify victims for bury.

The Da Nang Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs has sent officers to the affected communes of Xuan Ha, Thanh Khe Dong and Thanh Khe Tay to monitor the situation and provide timely relief for the typhoon victims.
The Municipal Preventive Medical Centre has also provided a huge volume of medicines and chemicals to treat the rescued fishermen.

On May 22, many families of typhoon victims in Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and other central provinces gathered in Da Nang city in the hope of receiving their relatives. VOV reporters contacted fishing vessel DNA90151 of Pham Van Tham in Xuan Ha commune of Da Nang city’s Thanh Khe district and a fisherman on the vessel said: “Right after the Vietnamese fishing vessels were caught in the storm, the Chinese
Sea Search and Rescue Centre sent many rescue ships to save the lives of hundreds fishermen in distress and rescue dozens of vessels, including our vessel. We’d like to express our thanks to the Chinese Government and sailors for their valuable assistance.”

In Nghia An commune, Tuong Nghia district of Quang Ngai province, five ships were sunk. As many as 21 people have been rescued, while 21 others remain missing. Le Huy Phuc, an official from the Nghia An communal People’s Committee, said two ships among the five sinking ships have been rescued. Currently, Quang Ngai provincial authorities are co-operating with functional agencies and Chinese rescue teams in searching and rescuing the three missing ships.

*** The losses caused by typhoon Chanchu appear to be the heaviest in the past 10 years. Agencies at all levels, sectors and the entire people need to join efforts in helping the central region overcome the consequences of the calamity.
The Vietnam Red Cross Society has sent a message of condolence and decided to provide each victim’s family with VND1 million. The Quang Nam provincial Red Cross Committee has also launched a campaign to raise funds for the typhoon victims’ families.
