Vietnamese Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung hailed the further progress of peace consolidation and post-conflict reconstruction in Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), while chairing a UN Security Council meeting in New York on July 24 to discuss issues relating to the UN Operation in the African country.
Ambassador Trung, who is Vietnam’s deputy representative to the UNSC noted the positive political environment, the incipient economic recovery, and the effective mediation role of Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore.

The Vietnamese ambassador welcomed further steps taken by concerned parties towards preparing for the presidential elections in Cote d’Ivoire on November 30, 2008.

He said Vietnam shares the UNSC’s concern about the continued volatile situation in northern and western areas, the growing localised criminality, the persistent lack of progress on the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of ex-combatants and dismantling of militias, as well as the stalled unification of armed forces and restoration of State administration throughout the country.

He called on all relevant parties to maintain the momentum of reconciliation, sustained dialogue and cooperation in light of the Ouagadougou Political Agreement and its Supplementary Agreements, thereby helping to keep the peace process at the best interest of Cote d’Ivoire people.

He also called upon United Nations agencies, African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and the international community to help Cote d’Ivoire optimize its resources and capacity to address national priorities and challenges in each particular phase of development.
