Vietnam is likely to be one of the most affected countries in the world if sea water levels continue to rise at their current rate, according to a press release by the United Nations Development Programme, (UNDP) on June 4.

Estimates show that if global sea water levels rose by one metre, the country would face losses totaling US$17 billion per year; one fifth of the population would lose their homes; and 12.2 percent of Vietnam’s most fertile land would likely be lost.

Country Director of the UNDP in Vietnam Setsuko Yamazaki emphasized that it is time to find out reasons for climate change in Vietnam and it is necessary to put the issue of sea water levels in Vietnam’s economic and development plans.
