Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Vu Trong Kim is leading a Vietnamese delegation to the General Assembly of the International Association of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (AICESIS 2011) that takes place in Rome from July 21-23.

In his report sent to the conference, the VFF leader highlighted Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements and its results in poverty reduction.

From a country facing food shortage in early 1990s, Vietnam has become one of the three biggest rice exporters in the world with secured food security, he said.

The report also indicated that part of Vietnam’s political system and a political foundation of the people administration, a venue for its members to express their will and desire, promote the great national unity bloc and brings into play people’s mastery rights, helping to defend national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and successfully implement industrialisation and modernisation.

Mr. Kim said as a member of the AICESIS, the VFF has joined hands with the Vietnamese State to implement a comprehensive strategy on economic growth and poverty reduction to fulfill the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The UN and other partners have recognised Vietnam’s results in implementing MDGs on poverty reduction, says the report, adding that the nation is likely to finalise its remaining targets prior to 2015.

Founded in 1999, AICESIS now has 64 member nations and the VFF has become the association’s member in 2009.
