A crack-down on women and children smuggling at the Vietnam-China border was launched at a conference held by the Ministry of Public Security in the northern border province of Lang Son on July 7.

The conference discussed measures to combat women and children smuggling and worked out solutions to help victims return home and re-integrate into the community.

In the first half of 2006, 166 cases involving the smuggling of 321 women and children across the Vietnam-China border were uncovered. The smugglers usually used small tracks on the Vietnam-China border and took advantage of the simple entry and exit procedures to bring Vietnamese women and children to China and Chinese children to Vietnam for transport to third countries.

They mainly tricked poor-educated people into selling this year women to brothels or to illegal match-makers.
