The first Ho Chi Minh City International Futsal (indoor football) Championships kicked off at the Phu Tho Competition Hall in the afternoon of June 14, drawing the participation of four teams from Vietnam and Thailand.

On the first day of competition, both Vietnamese teams were heavily defeated by Thai rivals; Hanoi team losing by 3-9 to Thailand’s Chonburi Blue Wave club and HCM City team by 2-6 against Thailand’s TOT club.

During the championships, two friendly matches between Vietnam and Japan also took place in order to select the best Vietnamese players for the upcoming 24th SEA Games in Thailand.

The event is a good chance for Vietnamese footballers to gain more experience prior to the SEA Games and the 2007 Asia Indoor Games.

Participating teams will compete on a round-robin basis until June 16. The champion will receive a prize of US$5,000, while the runner-up will be awarded US$3,000.
