State President Nguyen Minh Triet on June 8 granted amnesty to a man who was serving his jail term for spying.

Nguyen Vu Binh, sentenced to seven years imprisonment and three years of probation in May 2004, was released after he had sent a letter pleading for clemency.

Binh, who had already served more than two-thirds of his sentence, expressed in his letter his wish to be reunited with his family and pledged to fully exercise his rights and obligations of a citizen.

He also thanked the Nam Ha prison management for their care while he was serving his sentence there.

Binh, born in 1968 in northern Nam Dinh province’s Xuan Truong district and residing in Vinh Tuy precinct, Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi, was prosecuted and arrested by the Hanoi Police for spying on September 25, 2002 under the Penal Code’s Article 80.

Right after his release in the afternoon of June 9, Binh left the Nam Ha prison for his home.
