From June 6-14, the Abbott Laboratories and Operation Smile offered free surgeries for 120 children with harelips and cleft palates in the Hue Odonto Maxilo-facial Hospital.

The patients were all under eight months old and from poor families in remote areas of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam provinces. Each operation cost between VND1-2 million, excluding transport and accommodation fees.

The free surgeries were conducted by 10 doctors from Russia, Canada and the HCM City and Hue Odonto Maxilo-facial Hospitals with the assistance of a group of volunteers from the Abbott Laboratories and the International Volunteer Organisation.

According to Dr. Tran Quoc Thanh, a representative from the Abbott Laboratories, Vietnam has more than 3,000 infants born with facial deformities every year. He says Operation Smile plans to provide free surgeries to 5,000 children around the world on the occasion of the organisation’s 25th anniversary.

Last year, the two organisations provided free operations for nearly 500 children with harelips and cleft palates in Hanoi, Thua Thien-Hue and Ho Chi Minh City.
